Hungry Kids of Hungary

While the mention of their name often invokes raised eyebrows and amused smiles among the uninitiated, Brisbane four-piece Hungry Kids of Hungary produce music that inspires equal measures of curiosity and joy. Forming in March 2007, the band have wasted no time in carving out a name for themselves in the Australian music scene, helped along by air play on Triple J’s 2008 and Home and Hosed programs which eventually led to regular rotation on the station.

Dressing their immaculate indie tunes with a healthy dose of 60’s pop sensibility and lashings of soul, Hungry Kids have clearly done their rock history homework, but manage to apply their learning without ever sounding formulaic. Recorded in May 2008 at Brisbane’s Airlock Studios, their self-titled debut EP shows their musical dexterity, skipping lithely between jangly pop gems, hushed ballads and slinky soul numbers.

After snaring a slot at Big Day Out (thanks Unearthed), HKoH headed back into the studio in February to record their second EP Mega Mountain and have since made it their mission to play as many shows as possible.

First single ‘Scattered Diamonds’ hit radio airwaves becoming a feelgood hit for the summer and saw the guys hit the road with triple j upstarts, the Philly Jays and Washington.

Continuing the touring throughout Winter and well into Spring, the band trekked the country supporting both Little Birdy and Bertie Blackman on their consecutive national tours. While eager to hit the studio once again, the Kids hit the road for one last round of touring for 2009, embarking on their very first headline tour in November with the release of their brand new single ‘Let You Down’.

Now, with the dawn of the new century, they’re ready to funk up Rundle Park as the headline act for this year’s Explode! showcase.
